FAQs

How difficult is this trek?

This is considered a moderate backpacking adventure in wild, remote country. We’ll hike anywhere from 3–10 miles a day over uneven terrain and up and down steep switchbacks, while carrying packs (20 to 30 pounds including our own sleeping bag, mattress pads and personal items. (See our Hiking Itinerary for full details.)

The weather here is extremely variable. We strongly recommend that participants have a good level of fitness and are well prepared and have at least some hiking experience. The support staff that will be on this adventure will be with us for the entirety of the adventure helping us carry group supplies and helping us see the true Patagonian experience.

Are transfers included?

It is each guest's responsibility to arrive at Chile's Balmaceda Airport (BBA) no later than 4pm on Day 1 of our trip (see Travel & Logistics). As guests arrive at BBA airport throughout the day, Modern Adventure will schedule complimentary small group transfers to our hotel in Coyhaique, a 50-minute drive away.

After breakfast on our last day, Modern Adventure will organize transfers back to Coyhaique, arriving in the afternoon, and onward to BAA airport. If you’re departing from Coyhaique this day, your flight from BAA airport should be scheduled to depart at 6pm or later.

What about supplements if I am traveling solo?

Prices are based on double occupancy – if you would like to be paired up with a roommate you should choose ‘Single: Willing to Share’ at check out. Modern Adventure will pair you up with a roommate of the same gender to share tent and lodge accommodations. If you are a solo traveler and want to have your own accommodations, a supplement will apply at checkout – these spots are very limited due to the type of accommodations on our adventure and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis (see our Terms and Conditions for full details).

Who is going on this trip?

This adventure is recommended for travelers aged 20 and above who are in good health and have some experience with backpacking. You can expect to be joined by a variety of guest including couples, friends traveling together and solo travelers. We’ll also be joined by local backpacking guides, porters, and a Modern Adventure Trip Leader.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel on or before July 18, 2021 and receive a full refund minus a $500 per-person service fee. If you cancel on or after July 19, 2021 there is a 50% cancellation fee. On or after September 16, 2021 there is a 100% cancellation fee.

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance as we are not able to make exceptions to this policy in cases family/medical emergency or cases of the trip being cancelled (see our Terms and Conditions for full details).

What if I have special dietary needs?

While we do make an effort to accommodate special dietary requirements, our hiking adventures may hold particular difficulties when attempting to accommodate restrictions or requirements. We ask that you inform us of any dietary needs on your traveler information form (you will receive this form prior to travel) so we can make our partners in Chile aware of allergies and other requirements, and will reach out if we run into any roadblocks. If you have any significant concerns, please reach out to discuss possible difficulties with our concierge team.
